According to Casey Anthony's father, George Anthony, Casey left the family's home on June 16, 2008,taking her daughter, Caylee (who was almost three) with her and did not return for 31 days.Casey's mother Cindy asked repeatedly during the month to see Caylee, but Casey claimed that she was too busy with a work assignment in Tampa, Florida. At other times, she said Caylee was with a nanny, later identified by Casey as Zenaida "Zanny" Fernandez-Gonzalez, or at theme parks or the beach. was eventually determined that a woman named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez did in fact exist, but that she had never met Casey Anthony, Caylee Anthony, any member of the Anthony family, or any of Casey's friends.

On July 13, 2008, while doing yard work, Cindy and George Anthony found a notice from the post office for a certified letter affixed on their front door. George Anthony picked up the certified letter from the post office on July 15, 2008, and found that his daughter's car was in a tow yard. George picked up the car, both he and the tow yard attendant noted a strong smell coming from the trunk. Both later testified that they believed the odor to be that of a decomposing body. When the trunk was opened, it contained a bag of trash, but no human remains.

Cindy Anthony reported Caylee missing that day, July 15, to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. During the same telephone call, Casey Anthony told the 911 operator that Caylee had been missing for 31 days. Sounding distraught, Cindy said: "There is something wrong. I found my daughter's car today and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car."

US singer Janet Jackson and James DeBarge, who were briefly married in 1984, had a daughter together, DeBarge's brother Young DeBarge has claimed on a radio program.

Young DeBarge said the child, named Renee and now 18, has been living with Rebbie Jackson, Janet's oldest sister.

His comments lent support to reports that have circulated for years claiming Janet has a "secret" daughter.

Jackson's publicist didn't immediately return a call today.

The singer and James DeBarge were married for less than three months when she was just 18. The marriage was annulled a year later.

"James and the Jackson family kept everything real close, real tight," Young DeBarge said last Friday on New York radio station WQHT, known as Hot 97.

"They weren't very revealing about what the relationship was about."

"No one really knew how it was working out until things kind of surfaced," he said.

DeBarge said Renee "is a wonderful singer".

Shakira Mebarak (full name: Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) was born February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, into a poor family. After that breakthrough, Pies Descalzos just kept spinning off singles: "Dónde Estás Corazón?," "Antología," "Pienso en Ti," "Un Poco de Amor," "Se Quiere, Se Mata." The album hit number one in eight different countries and eventually went platinum in the U.S. as well; Shakira toured for nearly two years promoting it (she finally left El Oasis in 1997).

Seeking to build on her success, Shakira signed Emilio Estefan -- Gloria's husband and a highly successful music-biz insider -- as her manager and producer. The move paid off when her follow-up album, 1998's Dónde Están los Ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?), became an even bigger worldwide hit than its predecessor. When Gloria Estefan offered to translate "Ojos Así" into English, the prospect of a crossover suddenly seemed tangible, and Shakira decided that the most effective way to maintain control over her material was to learn English well enough to write in it herself. In the meantime, she set the stage for her crossover bid with a performance on MTV Unplugged, the channel's first Spanish-language broadcast. MTV Unplugged was released as an album in early 2000, and topped the Latin charts for two weeks on its way to becoming her third straight platinum album; it also won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. Mainstream pop stardom beckoned. Michael Jackson, 1958-2009, died today at 2:26 pm (Pacific standard time) after suffering a heart attack and falling into a coma. He was rushed to U.C.L.A. Medical Center and was pronounced dead shortly there after. Even though the last 20 years have been pretty tumultuous for M.J., he was and will remain an icon in his own right. I know that for myself as for millions of others around the globe, his music, specifically the records from the early 1980's represent a time and a cultural phenomena that has yet to be matched. Its obvious that he suffered some kind of mental breakdown or trauma in later years and went over the edge not only with the facial surgeries he had, but with the charges of sexual molestation brought against him and the millions he paid out of court to keep the issue quiet. I can even admit that when Michael Jackson appeared as a character on South Park ("The Jeffersons", episode 807, aired 2004) I laughed until my side hurt when he tossed "Blanket" into the air, and later when part of his face fell off. Tacky, yes but then a lot of humor geared towards celebrities and otherwise is tacky and distasteful. However, when you google "Thriller" or "Beat it" or Billy Jean" and even "We Are the World" along with countless other songs from that time you'll find music that wasn't only monumental for the time but also strategic in the evolution of sound, style and rhythmic dancing.

I remember as a young girl sitting in my parents home, with my father soon after they had divorced. Leafing through the Thriller album (1982) and opening the cardboard folds, marveling at the pictures. My father played the record loudly, with the front door open sharing the music with the rest of the neighborhood. It was the early 80's and we altered between Michael Jackson, Boy George and The Culture Club and Billy Joel's "The Stranger". Good times.

Along with music, one can not ignore the stylistic choices of Michael Jackson who was also a fashion icon. I had a "Michael Jackson" jacket, red and black with diagonal zippers going down the front worn (of course) with a white glove. I wish I had a photograph of myself wearing the jacket, but that was before the digital era and photos weren't as disposable. The memory is imprinted in my mind in photographic form, as memories often are, but its not the same as an actual image plastered between pages of an album. Music has a way of documenting and making an imprint on life as does art. When I hear certain songs or records by particular artists I"m immediately transported back to that year, who I was hanging out with, how I dressed, and reminded of any events that may have transpired. Art in a similar way not only documents time (based on when it was made) but also makes a mark in the time-line of personal experience. I also remember when I saw Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Memory" at the Museum of Modern Art. Music, the audio accompaniment of life like art the visual accompaniment carry us through, marking the wall as we grow and age.

Today is the 27th birthday of Britney Spears and also the release of her new cd Circus (go to my review blog for a complete review of the CD). While she has had her fair share of setbacks (and I am sure an equal amount of regrets). I thought today would be the perfect day to talk about how Ms.Spears affected my life.

I was 16 years old at the time and I was the biggest teenie bopper you have ever seen. I loved NSYNC and their female counterpart, Britney Spears. Okay here is where it gets super embarrassing, when I was 16, I said that if I could trade places with anyone famous I would trade places with Britney, oh how things have changed.

So there I was watching the MTV movie awards and Britney took the stage and I saw a little something sparkling from her stomach. Britney had gotten her belly button pierced and by default, I wanted to get mine done too.
I begged, I pleaded, I whined, but my parents would not let me get my belly button pierced. They said I needed to think about it, that I might regret it if I got my belly button pierced-blah blah blah. Well a whole year went by and my parents said that I could finally get it pierced. Wahooey!
So as I held my mom's hand they shoved a needle through the top part of my little belly button. And for the next 2 years I was pleased as punch with my gem filled belly button. But when I turned 20 I started to think that maybe I had outgrown my little belly ring. So I took it out and waited for the hole to close.

Avril Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984, in Belleville, Ontario, Canada to John and Judy Lavigne. Avril's parents are of Franco-Ontarian Roman Catholic descent. Avril has one young sister Michelle and an older brother Matthew. At the age of 5, Avril's family moved to Napanee, Ontario, Canada. Avril started singing there in a church "choir". She also learned guitar on herself.

When she was singing country covers at a Chapters bookstore in Kingston, Ontario, she was discovered first by her first professional manager, Cliff Fabri. She got the attention of the local folksinger Steve Medd, when she was performing with the Lennox Community Theatre. Later Avril moved to Los Angeles, California, where she co-written the songs for her album with Cliff Magness and the songwriting team The Matrix. She described her debut album "Let Go" as a pop album, was released by Arista Records on June 4, 2002. The album made a huge success, in US it reached to No. 2, while in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom it reached to No. 1 position. With this she became the youngest female soloist to have a No. 1 album in the UK until Joss Stone's album "Mind, Body & Soul" in 2004.

The album containing four singles, all became hit. Song "Complicated" became No.1 in Australia while No. 2 on the US Hot 100, other song "Sk8er Boi" became the top 10 in the U.S. and Australia and No. 1 in Canada; "I'm With You" became top 5 in the US, while "Losing Grip" became No. 1 in Canada. It became the best-selling Canadian singles of 2002. "Let Go" earned 5 Grammy nominations, MTV music awards, MTV European music awards, won four Juno Awards and many more. It has sold millions of copies worldwide.

On May 25, 2004 Avril's second album was released called "Under My Skin". Avril has co-written most of the songs with Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, some tracks are co-written by Lavigne and Ben Moody, and some with her former lead guitarist Evan Taubenfeld.

The song "Don't Tell Me" reached No. 1 in Argentina, top 5 in UK and Canada and top 10 in Australia and Brazil. In 2006, Avril is going to make her film debut in the animated film "Over the Hedge (Voice)". She is acting in the Richard Gere film "The Flock". Also acting in "Fast Food Nation" with Patricia Arquette, Bobby Cannavale, Ethan Hawke and Greg Kinnear. She has also performed at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics (Turin, Italy).

Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan, USA. Madonna was the third of eight children into a large Italian family. Her father, Sylvio Ciccone, was a design engineer for General Motors, and her mother was Madonna Ciccone. When Madonna was six years old, she lost her mother.

Madonna attended the University of Michigan on a dance scholarship for two years before heading to New York City to become a ballet dancer. Born in Houston in the fall of 1981, Beyonci Giselle Knowles started performing at age seven. From dance classes to singing in the church choir, Beyonci was a natural.

She and cousin Kelly Rowland met Latavia Roberson during this time, and the trio formed a group with Letoya Luckett. Mathew Knowles, Beyonci's father and Rowland's legal guardian, signed on to be the girls' manager. This situation would ultimately lead to the formation of one of the most popular female RB groups of all time -- Destiny's Child.

Destiny's Child made its debut 1990 and within ten years, the vocal act had experienced personal and political highs and lows that fueled the group's desire to make it big.

Destiny's Child sold 33 million albums worldwide by 2002 and earned a slew of Grammys and additional music awards. "Jumpin' Jumpin'," "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Say My Name," and "Survivor" were smash hits, and the group appeared unstoppable.

In 2001, Beyonci, Rowland, and Michelle Williams allowed themselves a break from the singing group and tried their hands at individual solo careers. Kelly Clarkson Biography

Kelly Clarkson was born on April 24, 1982 in Burleson, Texas to. Jeanne (teacher) and Steven Clarkson. They were divorced when she was six. Her stepfather is Jimmy Taylor (contractor). She has two older siblings, Jason and Alyssa.

Singing was not Kelly’s passion as a child. She loved science and wanted to eventually become a marine biologist (the story goes that she changed her mind after seeing the movie Jaws). Her start in music came while hanging out in school while she was in the seventh grade. A music teacher in her school (Pauline Hughes Middle School) overheard her singing in the hallway and was awestruck. He then persuaded her to join the school’s choir.

This gave her the push to not only perform in the choir, but in High School, she continued singing and also stared in the school’s (Burleson High School) rendition of Brigadoon. She even become a member of the Texas All-State Choir.

By the time she graduated High School in 2000, she became focused on having a career in music. She worked odd jobs to make money to help her pursue her dreams (such as working as a cocktail waitress and a clerk). She eventually recorded a demo CD, but did not receive any positive responses from the record labels.

She knew she had what it takes, and moved to Los Angeles to be where the action is – and closer to her eventual fame.

Her first professional job was not as a singer, but as an extra on the television series Sabrina the Teenage Witch. But she continued to find small jobs to pay the bills while working on her career and networking with people in the industry (like song writer Gerry Goffin (“Natural Woman”)).

In one great swoop, Gerry Gorrin got ill, her car was towed away and her apartment went up in flames. At this point, with her career going nowhere and no money in the bank, she took a step back and returned home to her family. It was back home that a friend told her about auditions for a hit reality show in the Texas area, and she applied for the hit show American Idol.

After getting herself together, she was on a mission to make it in show biz. She soon auditioned for American Idol, and after surviving more auditions, she went back to Hollywood and made it to the finalists on televisions. In September 2002, she was named the winner of American Idol.

She released a single, “A Moment Like This” (which she sung shortly after winning) soon after, and shot up to number one on the Billboard charts the following month. [Note: This was the greatest one-month gain for a single to go to number one]. Following all the excitement, she went on a thirty-city tour with 10 of the other finalists over the next six weeks.

Kelly would not let the momentum stop, and began filming her first movie in 2003, From Justin to Kelly (with Idol runner-up Justin Guarini). As soon as filming was complete (it only took six weeks), she went to the studio to record an album.

Her debut album, Thankful, was released in April 2003 and began on the Billboard Album chart at number one. The album was certified platinum within a few weeks.

The first single released was “Miss Independent” (co-written with Christina Aguilera) and quickly went to #1 on the charts. The video was nominated for three MTV Music Video Awards and a DVD by the same name was releases soon afterwards. Kelly Clarkson was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance – Female for this song.

All the other singles from the album also experienced extremely strong sales. To further promote the album, she went on an international tour starting out in the U.S. and then spanning out to various countries around the world. She even had time to lend her talents to the American Idol Christmas Special.

In 2004, she went out on tour again, this time with former American Idol winner Clay Aiken by her side. She called this the Independent Tour. Afterwards, she added her vocals to the soundtrack of The Princess Diaries 2 with a song called “Breakaway” (co-wrote by Avril Lavigne) The single of the song was another number one song for this young sensation.

In November 2004, her second album, Breakaway debuted on the Billboard charts at the third position.

In 2005, Kelly sung at Superbowl XXXIX (Tailgate Party) and also appeared on Saturday Night Live as a guest and musical performer. Then, this woman who never stops, is still going and finished up a thirty-five city tour around the country.

In February 2007, Clarkson partnered with NASCAR.

Hilary Erhard Duff (born in September 28, 1987) is an American actress, pop singer-songwriter and entrepreneur. Whitney Houston is inarguably one of the of the biggest female pop stars of all time. Her accomplishments as a hitmaker are extraordinary; just to scratch the surface, she became the first artist ever to have seven consecutive singles hit number one, and her 1993 Dolly Parton cover "I Will Always Love You" became nothing less than the biggest hit single in rock history. Houston was able to handle big adult contemporary ballads, effervescent, stylish dance-pop, and slick urban contemporary soul with equal dexterity; the result was an across-the-board appeal that was matched by scant few artists of her era, and helped her become one of the first black artists to find success on MTV in Michael Jackson's wake. Like many of the original soul singers, Houston was trained in gospel before moving into secular music; over time, she developed a virtuosic singing style given over to swooping, flashy melodic embellishments. The shadow of Houston's prodigious technique still looms large over nearly every pop diva and smooth urban soul singer -- male or female -- in her wake, and spawned a legion of imitators (despite some critics' complaints about over-singing). Always more of a singles artist, Houston largely shied away from albums during the '90s, releasing the bulk of her most popular material on the soundtracks of films in which she appeared. Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born in Newark, NJ, on August 9, 1963; her mother was gospel/R&B singer Cissy Houston, and her cousin was Dionne Warwick. By age 11, Houston was performing as a soloist in the junior gospel choir at her Baptist church; as a teenager, she began accompanying her mother in concert (as well as on the 1978 album Think It Over), and went on to back artists like Lou Rawls and Chaka Khan. Houston also pursued modeling and acting, appearing on the sitcoms Gimme a Break and Silver Spoons. Somewhat bizarrely, Houston's first recording as a featured vocalist was with Bill Laswell's experimental jazz-funk ensemble Material; their 1982 album One Down placed Houston alongside such unlikely avant-gardists as Archie Shepp and Fred Frith. The following year, Arista president Clive Davis heard Houston singing at a nightclub and offered her a record contract. Her first single appearance was a duet with Teddy Pendergrass, "Hold Me," which missed the Top 40 in 1984.
Houston's debut album, Whitney Houston, was released in March 1985. Its first single, "Someone for Me," was a flop, but the second try, "You Give Good Love," became Houston's first hit, topping the R&B charts and hitting number three pop. Houston's next three singles -- the Grammy-winning romantic ballad "Saving All My Love for You," the brightly danceable "How Will I Know," and the inspirational "The Greatest Love of All" -- all topped the pop charts, and a year to the month after its release, Whitney Houston hit number one on the album charts. It eventually sold over 13 million copies, making it the best-selling debut ever by a female artist. Houston cemented her superstar status on her next album, Whitney; despite the unimaginative title, it became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one, and sold over nine million copies. Its first four singles -- "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (another Grammy winner), "Didn't We Almost Have It All," "So Emotional," and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" -- all hit number one, an amazing, record-setting run of seven straight (broken by "Love Will Save the Day"). In late 1988, Houston scored a Top Five hit with the non-LP single "One Moment in Time," recorded for an Olympics-themed compilation album.
Houston returned with her third album, I'm Your Baby Tonight, in 1990; a more urban-sounding, R&B-oriented record, it immediately spun off two number one hits in the title track and "All the Man That I Need." But the quality of the material was generally viewed as, overall, much weaker than her previous efforts, and following those two hits, sales of the album tapered off quickly, halting around four million copies. Nevertheless, Houston remained so popular that she could even take a recording of "The Star Spangled Banner" (performed at the Super Bowl) into the pop Top 20 -- though, of course, the Gulf War had something to do with that. In retrospect, the erratic quality of I'm Your Baby Tonight seemed to signal Houston's declining interest in making fully fleshed-out albums. Instead, she began to focus on an acting career, which she hadn't pursued since her teenage years; she also married singer Bobby Brown in the summer of 1992. Her first feature film, a romance with Kevin Costner called The Bodyguard, was released in late 1992; it performed well at the box office, helped by an ad campaign which seemingly centered around the climactic key change in Houston's soundtrack recording of the Dolly Parton-penned "I Will Always Love You." In fact, the ad campaign undoubtedly helped "I Will Always Love You" become the biggest single in pop music history. It set new records for sales (nearly five million copies) and weeks at number one (14), although those were later broken by Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997" and Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," respectively. Meanwhile, the soundtrack eventually sold an astounding 16 million copies, and also won a Grammy for Album of the Year.
Once Houston had stopped raking in awards and touring the world, she prepared her next theatrical release, the female ensemble drama Waiting to Exhale. A few months before its release at the end of 1995, it was announced that she and Brown had split up; however, they called off the split just a couple months later, and rumors about their tempestuous relationship filled the tabloids for years to come. Waiting to Exhale was released toward the end of the year, and the first single from the soundtrack, "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)," topped the charts; the album sold over seven million copies. For her next project, Houston decided to return to her gospel roots; the soundtrack to the 1996 film The Preacher's Wife, which naturally featured Houston in the title role, was loaded with traditional and contemporary gospel songs, plus guest appearances by Houston's mother, Shirley Caesar, and the Georgia Mass Choir. Houston also began making headlines for what appeared to be increasing unreliability, cancelling several TV and concert appearances due to illness.
In 1998, Houston finally issued a new full-length album, My Love Is Your Love, her first in eight years. Houston worked with pop/smooth soul mainstays like Babyface and David Foster, but also recruited hip-hop stars like Missy Elliott, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Q-Tip. The album sold even fewer copies than I'm Your Baby Tonight, but it received Houston's most enthusiastic reviews in quite some time. Moreover, it produced one of her biggest R&B chart hits (seven weeks at number one) in the trio number "Heartbreak Hotel," done with Faith Evans and Kelly Price. She also duetted with Mariah Carey on "When You Believe," a song from the animated film The Prince of Egypt. After 14 years of marriage, Canadian country singer Shania Twain and music producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange have separated according to some published reports.

Her rep Jason Owen confirms in a statement "Shania Twain and her husband, music producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, are separating after 14 years of marriage. This is a private matter and there will be no further comment at this time.”

Twain, 42, and Lange, 59, married in December 1993, just six months after meeting. They have a 7-year-old son named Eja D'Angelo.

A new Twain album is expected later this year; Universal Music Group Nashville hasn't said whether or not Lange had a hand in the forthcoming set.

The ABC Daytime and SOAPnet Soap Nation Tour rolls into Georgia Sat., Aug. 8, with a free event to be held before multi-platinum, country music superstar Sara Evans’ concert.

Actors from all three ABC soaps, “All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital,” will participate at on-site events in the afternoon leading up to the concert. The event will take place at Noon in Mableton, Georgia at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheater. Soap Nation is an ongoing initiative to bring ABC Daytime and SOAPnet stars to more fans in more cities more often.

“General Hospital’s” Bradford Anderson will host the event. The ABC Daytime talent confirmed to attend the Mableton pre-concert events include Melissa Claire Egan and Darnell Williams from “All My Children”; Scott Clifton and Bree Williamson from “One Life to Live”; and Brandon Barash and Lisa LoCicero from “General Hospital.”

Additionally, The American Red Cross Blood Services will also be on site at in Mableton to encourage and collect blood donations.

'I didn't expect him to be that cool,' Akon recalls in moment from MTV's 'Michael Jackson's Human Nature.'
In 2007, Akon spent time in a Las Vegas studio with the King of Pop, writing and recording songs for what Jackson intended to be his comeback album. Nearly three years later, only two of those songs have surfaced: a remix of Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" that appeared on the 25th anniversary edition of MJ's Thriller album and "Hold My Hand," a track featuring both artists (but written by Claude Kelly), that made the file-sharing rounds last year.

And after Jackson's death in June, who knows when more of the tracks will see the light of day? Akon said that he and Jackson recorded "days" of material, most of which never made it past the demo stages. And, really, he's not that concerned if they are ever released, because, in the wake of Jackson's passing, Akon would prefer to reminisce about the man, not the music.
"My favorite moment was the day we actually met, because I didn't expect him to be that cool," Akon said in MTV's "Michael Jackson's Human Nature" special, which aired over the weekend. "I expected him to be this diva — just hard to deal with, rarely speaks, got to send his message through someone else, you know? Because these are the stories you hear."

Before they recorded a note of music, Akon had a sitdown meeting with Jackson, one that began predictably — and seemed to confirm the producer's worst fears — but quickly became a life-changing event.

"So I'm going upstairs [to meet him], I knock on the door, his bodyguard opens and says, 'OK, he's waiting to meet you.' A multicoloured portrait of the late Michael Jackson by Andy Warhol is to be auctioned off with a starting price of $800,000 US.
"This Andy Warhol portrait brings together the uncontested King of Pop Art with the uncontested King of Pop. The portrait was painted at the height of their careers and is a celebration of two of the great talents in global cultural history," said Janet Lehr of the Vered Gallery, agents for the seller, in a statement released on Friday.
The iconic portrait, created in 1984 to celebrate the massive popularity of Jackson's Thriller album, will be on show at London's British Music Experience from Aug. 6 to 8th.
The exhibition space is inside the O2 arena where Jackson had been due to perform a series of concerts this summer into September.
The 50-year-old performer suffered a cardiac arrest at his rented home in Los Angeles on June 25. An autopsy report is expected out soon.
Warhol's Technicolor silkscreens of iconic celebrities such as Liz Taylor and modern objects continue to reap high bids. The artist died in 1987.
The silkscreen, which measures 76.2 by 66 centimetres, is expected to fetch much more than its starting price of $800,000 U.S.
The highest price ever paid for a Warhol portrait was $28 million for Lemon Marilyn in 2007.
The auction of the Jackson portrait will be held at the Vered Art Gallery in East Hampton, N.Y. on Aug. 18.

Legendary performer Michael Jackson, whose groundbreaking music and dance moves earned him the nickname the "King of Pop," died in Los Angeles on Thursday after apparently going into cardiac arrest. He was 50.
In a brief news conference, the performer's brother, Jermaine Jackson, said he was pronounced dead in hospital at 2:26 p.m. PT. It's believed Jackson suffered cardiac arrest at his home, but Jermaine Jackson said an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death.
The autopsy was performed Friday.
Paramedics had responded to a call at Jackson's rented mansion in Holmby Hills about 12:30 p.m. PT, but Jackson was not breathing when they arrived.
Jermaine Jackson said his brother's personal doctor, who was in the house at the time, and paramedics had tried to resuscitate him.
Paramedics continued to perform CPR as Jackson was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, Jermaine Jackson said.
"Upon arriving at the hospital at approximately 1:14 p.m., a team of doctors, including emergency physicians and cardiologists, attempted to resuscitate him for a period of more than one hour, but they were unsuccessful," he said.
"My family request that the media please respect our privacy during this time, and may all love be with you, Michael, always. We love you."

Born in Gary, Ind., in 1958, Michael Jackson began his music career at the age of five, joining his brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Jermaine as the lead singer of the family pop music group, the Jackson Five.The group played at nightclubs in the Gary area, and young Michael soon made a name for himself as a singer and dancer of exceptional ability.

Jackson's first big solo success was the 1979 album Off the Wall, which spawned a record-breaking four No. 1 singles in the U.S. and earned Jackson his first American Music Award.
His 1982 album Thriller made him a musical phenomenon. Produced by Quincy Jones, it spanned a number of pop genres and reigned for 37 weeks on top of the charts.
It produced seven hit singles, and the videos that accompanied them made Jackson's signature moonwalk one of the best-known dance moves in the world. His Bad, Dangerous and HIStory albums also were bestsellers.

The King is dead! Long live the cash-in!
While she waited for Michael Jackson's memorial service to begin at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on 7 July, the Sky News anchor asked her guests, including Lou Ferrigno, the Incredible Hulk actor, billed as the singer's friend and personal trainer, whether now that he was dead, we could forget about the child abuse allegations and the rest of the weirdness that surrounded him and instead simply remember the superstar.

In the warmth of that summer morning and in the heat of the "whoopla" attending the event (to borrow the term of another of Jackson's confidants, Elizabeth Taylor), it felt a forgivable question, but the weirdness was always inseparable from the transformative process that saw this troubled black child from Gary, Indiana become a universal figure of indeterminate race and sexual yearnings: the self-styled King of Pop.

It's a point lost, however, on those publishers and authors who rushed into print before Jackson's emaciated and pock-ridden corpse was laid to rest. The most feeble effort is Michael Jackson: Legend, Hero, Icon (HarperCollins £12.99, pp192) written by James Aldis, a self-confessed fan whose chief credential is that he "was among the many fans to have bought tickets for the London O2 arena performances". It skims over the 2005 child abuse court case in a paragraph, although novel insight is offered into the source of Jackson's changing image: "Perhaps as a direct consequence of the stress, Michael's appearance seemed further removed from the happy, dark-skinned child he had once been." The jacket lifts quotes mourning the singer from three of his fellow stars – Mariah Carey, Madonna and, bathetically, Fergie, from the Black Eyed Peas.

Its rival as a coffee-table companion, Michael Jackson: Life of a Legend (Headline £17.99, pp192) by Michael Heatley has better pictures, and the story is told at greater length in Michael Jackson: King of Pop (John Blake £7.99, pp288) by Emily Herbert (previous credits: Gok Wan: The Biography and Kerry: Story of a Survivor). But best of this sorry bunch is former Melody Maker writer Chris Roberts's more astute tribute, Michael Jackson: the King of Pop (Carlton £14.99, pp144).

Neither Jackson's protestations nor the findings of the jury could initially persuade Ian Halperin that the singer was innocent of the charges brought against him in court. His Unmasked: the Final Years of Michael Jackson (Simon & Schuster £10, pp288) was being written to coincide with Jackson's O2 dates and it contains the results of his own investigative work. Refreshingly, he is candid about having set out to "nail" the singer, but the conclusion he draws, convincingly, is that Jackson was never a child molester but, rather, the victim of two extortion attempts.

Equally intriguing are claims that Lisa Marie Presley's marriage to Jackson in 1994 was part of a plot to bring him into the fold of Scientology. But the idea that Jackson could never love her (or show off his mottled penis to a child) because he was gay, with a hidden string of (adult) male lovers, feels less convincing. But the Michael Jackson myth has always served as locus for lurid speculation and if that appeals, this is the place to come – at least until tomorrow's tabloids appear with their new bombshell revelations.

Otherwise, anyone wanting a reliably solid account of Michael Jackson's life should continue to turn to J Randy Taraborrelli's 1991 biography, Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness (Pan £8.99, pp704), updated in 2004 but yet to be further revised. "Why not just tell people I'm an alien from Mars?" Jackson told Taraborrelli in 1995, in a quote that prefaces the book. "Tell them I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight. They'll believe anything you say, because you're a reporter. But if I, Michael Jackson, were to say, 'I'm an alien ...', people would say, 'Oh, man, that Michael Jackson is nuts. He's cracked up! You can't believe a thing that comes out of his mouth ...'"

The one thing that none of these books bother with much is, inevitably, his music, and so it is that for all these several hundred thousand words written about Jackson's life and death, the most fun is to be found in Smash Hits: Michael Jackson 52-page Special Tribute Issue edited by Barry McIlheney (Bauer £2.99, p52). Lazarus-like, rather than like the ghouls rising from the dead in the "Thriller" video, the magazine has returned for a one-off issue, complete with a guide on how to moonwalk and a selection of old reviews of his singles. "I like Michael Jackson," wrote guest reviewer Zodiac Mindwarp of "The Way You Make Me Feel" in 1987. "I don't think he's 'wacko' at all."
